Position Information:
FedEx Corporation is seeking an Attorney with six or more years of experience in international or federal tax planning and controversy practice for its corporate Legal department. The position is located at its headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee.
Responsibilities will include :
The balance between federal and international assignments for the position will depend upon the candidateâs level of contest experience and interests.
International assignments will include some travel and an understanding of VAT and Income Tax Treaties with the ability to research for country spe! cific tax treatment and procedures. These assignments will usually involve very proactive management of local counsel and be responsible for strategic decisions in litigation, and depending on the country, the administrative appeal process. The position is responsible for all tax contest submissions and aligning positions to be consistent with overall Company positions.
Federal assignments will include some general federal tax research and risk assessment of planning proposals, but will primarily assist in the preparation of responses to 5701s and respond to any process questions from the audit team. The attorney will directly assist or handle directly the tax appeal process, including drafting protests and supporting briefs.
FedEx Legal works closely with and advises the Companyâs Tax Department during their handling of audits. This position serves as the Tax Departmentâs counsel as they handle federal audits, and will be responsible for the preparation and han! dling of any administrative appeals, litigation, or communications with! government attorneys. Therefore, a strong understanding of the audit process, as well appeal process is critical.
The candidate will be expected to develop a strong understanding of the operational components and trends in the technology and transportation industries and unique tax issues associated with those industries.
This candidate will be expected to be a pro-active team player and communicate tax concepts ranging from those with little tax experience, to those who are well versed in complex tax issues.
The candidate will be expected to maintain high professional standards and integrity in the rendering of all advice and submissions.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Six or more years of experience in federal or international tax controversy preparation and management.
The position will be focused primarily on international and federal contests, though some experience in state contests is a plus.
A member in good standing of a s! tate bar and able to be admitted to practice law in the State of Tennessee.
LLM in Taxation preferred, CPA or Masters in Tax will be considered a strong plus.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines
Excellent interpersonal skills essential for effective interaction and coordination with internal clients, including heavy interaction with the Companyâs Tax Department.
An ability to communicate complex tax issues effectively to tax professionals and litigators, and likewise adjust for those who are nonâ"tax personnel so that tax concerns are fully understood.
Qualifications:
Juris doctorate degree from an A.B.A. accredited law school and admission to the bar. At least six years of experience and demonstrated competence as a practicing attorney in relevant area of law. Superior academic record. Ability to determine app! ropriateness of settlement or litigation. Excellent research and writin! g skills. Strong negotiation, human relations and communications skills.
