Welding Engineer

Essential responsibilities include:
Oversees laboratory welding projects involving both R&D and failure analyses of welded components. Develops new welding technologies, procedures or uses that will enhance the manufacturing, refurbishment, serviceability or competitiveness of components manufactured at Alstom manufacturing f! acilities or sub-contractor sources. Responsible for successfu! l integration of welding technologies for
Alstomâs products and services including preparation and review of welding documentation for Alstom and sub-contractor sources.
Works with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop technologies for advanced welding/joining issues and to solve difficult welding/joining issues related to the existing and emerging power industry products and processes. Identifies opportunities for capturing intellectual property. Prepares patent disclosures and works with Alstomâs attorneys to prepare patent applications
Develops test plans, performance metrics, and budgets necessary for on-time project deliverables at-cost.
Responsible for tracking the financial aspects of assigned projects.
Coordinates and adjusts the team work load to ensure that work is completed as agreed.
Develops and manages contracts with suppliers to accomplish project targets
Communicates status of projec! ts to internal and external customers in review meetings, presentations, and through written reports.
Interacts with customers to meet their demands, and delivers product that meets Alstomâs Quality standards
Maintains technical proficiency in forming, heat treat and welding technologies including processes, consumables, techniques, weldment properties. Other areas of technical proficiencies to be maintained are failure analysis, quality assurance requirements and methods & manufacturing technologies.
Upholds and participates in the company quality and EHS programs and performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
MS level metallurgy, welding or material science degree person with graduate-level materials and welding research experience coupled with 5 years of industry experience in manual and mechanized process including SMAW, GTAW, GMAW and SAW.
A BS degree candidate with relevant experience will be considered.
5 years of welding experience in industry with relevant experien! ce performing welding engineering projects in an academic, R&D or technology development environment.
Skills in physical metallurgy, welding and joining technologies. Desirable skills include failure analysis, materials selection and application, weldment serviceability and problem mitigation strategies.
Awareness of material issues related to power or chemical industries. Desirable includes understanding of the materials and operation of critical boiler and turbine components.
Training and some experience in metallographic examination and microstructural interpretation.
Desirable: Experience resolving materials issues as related to processing and/or field problems.
Training and some experience in understanding the effects of high temperature service/ environment on components.
Awareness of R&D/technology development methodologies

Ability to cope with multiple simultaneous tasks, often under pressure
Ability to meet physical demands of the job, including but not limited to: frequent sitting, standing, and walking; frequent computer use; frequent telephone use; some lifting or moving up to 25 lbs.; ability to travel as needed (20% or less travel)
Ability to read, understand, and clearly speak the English language
Solid computer skills including Microsoft Office suite of tools
Close attention to detail and accuracy and process/systems mind-set
