Administrative Assistant - Public Defender

This position performs the most complex and varied professional administrative supp! ort services for the Public Defender, Deputy Public Defender, and the Office's appellate team. The Public Defender's Office represents indiviuals accused of committing crimes in Davidson County who cannot afford to hire a lawyer.

Typical Duties:
Specific Job Responsibilities include:
Providing direct administrative and secretarial support for the Public Defender and the Deputy Public Defender
Providing direct secretarial support to the Office's appellate team, including complex proofreading, editing, and preparation of appellate briefs and motions for filing in the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals and the Tennessee Supreme Court
Opening, closing and maintaining Office files (paper and electronic) consistent with practices and policies
Preparing, proofreading, printing, and mailing and/or filing legal pleadings and correspondence
Transcribing various recordings as requested by attorney staff
Overseeing implementation of s! pecial projects
Disseminating information to Office person! nel, other agencies, and/or the public as needed
Scheduling and coordinating appointments/meetings for the Public Defender
Handling phone calls and/or in-person inquiries for supervising attorneys when needed
Operating various office machines and equipment, and filling in at the reception desk when needed
May provide supervision/direction to other administrative staff

Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma plus six (6) years of secretarial/administrative experience in the legal field, or two (2) years of college and three (3) years of secretarial experience in the legal field is required . Paralegal certification and experience is strongly preferred. Prior experience serving as an administrative assistant in a law firm or indigent legal services office is also preferred. Applicants should have maturity; the ability to use independent judgment and discretion to resolve problems; excellent customer ser! vice skills and experience dealing with the public; and good organizational skills.
