DEFINITION : The part-time Volleyball Official is responsible for officiating in scheduled volleyball games and program! s sponsored or coordinated by the Parks and Recreation Department. A high level of independent judgment is necessary to be an Official. The employee is under the direction of the assigned supervisor and the administrative supervision of the Director of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation. All employees are responsible to the City Manager. This position is classified as Non-Exempt for the purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act. As Non-Safety Sensitive, the employee is subject to reasonable suspicion, post-accident (incident), return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB :
Officiates volleyball games as assigned and enforces the rules of play.
Ability to see play with sufficient clarity to make appropriate and accurate officiating decisions.
Maintains accurate score with flip top scoreboard.
Communicates with coaches, players, and sponsors and helps maintain order! on the volleyball court.
Maintains accurate time sheets a! nd submits them to a designated supervisor in a timely manner.
Stands, bends, stoops, reaches, walks, sits and climbs up and down a three-step ladder on volleyball judge stand intermittently.
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED :
Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES :
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Must have authorization to work in the United States of America.
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent required.
Prior experience in officiating volleyball games is desirable.
Must not have been convicted of, pleaded guilty to, entered a plea of nolo contendere to, or received judicial diversion for any:
sexual offense, or have been placed on a sex offender registry, regardless of the amount of time since the offense (Examples of sexual offenses include, but are not limited to, child mo! lestation, rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, prostitution, solicitation, indecent exposure.);
violent felony, regardless of the amount of time since the offense (Examples of violent felony offenses include, but are not limited to, murder, manslaughter, aggravated assault, kidnapping, robbery, aggravated burglary.);
violent misdemeanor offense or city ordinance violation relating to force or violence within the past five (5) years;
felony offense relating to possession, manufacture, or sale of controlled substances, controlled substance analogues or drug paraphernalia within the past ten (10) years; or,
misdemeanor offense involving use, or possession of controlled substances, controlled substance analogues or drug paraphernalia or felony use of a controlled substance or controlled substance analogues within the past three (3) years.
Knowledge of the Rules of Play standard to the game of volleyball and as modified by the City and the ability to enforc! e such rules.
Ability to work at least three (3) matches in success! ion.
Ability to see play with sufficient clarity to make appropriate and accurate officiating decisions.
Ability to view and understand any films and training given on officiating.
Ability to maintain order by communicating effectively with persons who may be irate and unreasonable.
Ability to climb a three-step ladder to the top of volleyball judge stand.
Literacy in English with the ability to understand, communicate to others, and carry out oral and written instructions and follow posted schedules.
Ability to establish and maintain effective, harmonious, cooperative, and productive working relationships with other participants including coaches, players, supervisors, and other employees of the Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department.
Ability to appear on time for all scheduled games and notify appropriate individuals in advance if unable to work.
Ability to work flexible hours with some weekend and evening work required.
Ability t! o concentrate and accomplish tasks despite interruptions.
Must have the ability to exercise independent judgment within the limits of the position.
Ability to maintain accurate time sheets and submit them to a designated supervisor in a timely manner.
Ability to learn and follow City policies and regulations.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION :
The employee operates ball pumps, whistles and a manual flip scoreboard.
The employee works indoors and outdoors at the assigned recreational facility.
The employee will be exposed to loud noises and moving volleyballs.
All City facilities and vehicles are tobacco free.
