DUTIES:
Functional Statement

: Dental Hygienist

Tour of Duty:
Based on the needs of the service

The licensed dental hygienist may peform the following duteis when assigned or delegated to the dental hygienist by a Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) dentist. The duties may include but are not limited to:

Dental prophylaxis

Scaling and root planning

Subgingival currettage

Administration of local anesthesia (may only be performed under direct supervision)

Exposure of radiographs, including digital, of the mouth, gums, jaws, teeth or any portion thereof for dental diagnosis.

Provi! des patient education including demonstrations of oral hygiene procedures and oral health care regimens

Serving as chairside dental assistant

Application of topical anesthetic and anti-implammatory agents

Irrigating extraction site

Taking alginate impressions for any purpose other than permanent restorations

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship.

Successfully completed a formal Dental Hygiene Program accredited by the American Ental Association's Commission on Accreditation. Public Law 97-35 requires that the persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited b! y an organization recognized by the Department of education, and be cer! tified as radiographers in their field.

Applicants must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist with a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR

GS-9 Level:
At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level:

Knowledge of state of the art preventive dentistry measures for patient instruction and training

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology in order to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and interrelationship of the various organs appearing on the film and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the radiograph for diagnostic use; and to correctly mount them for viewing;

Skill in providing individual and group oral health care instru! ctions to inpatients, outpatients, Nursing Home Care Unit patients, ect.; and

Knowledge of Joint Commission on Accrditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and related regulations and guidelines pertaining to dental matters.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterick (*):

Skill in performing specialized prophylactic and preventive dental hygiene procedures:

Ability to independently perform expanded dental functions under the technical guidance of a professional dentist;

  • Skill in providing individual and group oral health care instructions to patients and other staff regarding the practice of effective oral hygiene techniques; and
  • Skill in presenting oral hygiene lectures and demonstrations, and d! eveloping training materials.

Physical Requirements:
There is walking, extended periods of standing, repeated bending, carrying light objects such as instruments or other small parts. The work requires working under stressful conditions in a fast-paced setting to facilitate patient care.
