DUTIES:
The Dental Hygienist provides direct patient care under the general supervision of a dentist and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision. Work area includes Dental Service clinical areas, medical center wards, and nursing home care unit as needed. The incumbent sets up operatory for planned oral hygiene or periodontal therapy procedures and cleans dental unit for timely turnover. Handles instruments safely, accurately and efficiently. He/she accurately measure and records periodontal pocket depths. Provides routine oral prophylactic care to include topical application of fluoride rinses or gels. The incumbent provides gross debridement, deep scaling and soft tissue curettage and root planning procedures. He/she charts findings, periodontal pocket measurements, treatment plans, and treatment p! rovided in patient's electronic medical record. Cleans dental prosthesi! s (fixed and removable). Manages dental recall system utilizing CPRS and electronic scheduling package. Refers patients to general dentist, periodontist, or oral and maxillofacial surgeon for additional care when indicated. He/she applies desensitizing and sealant materials to teeth as clinically indicated. Makes impressions for fluoride carrier trays and instructs patients on proper use of trays and fluoride products. The incumbent provides patient education appropriate to the veteran's oral needs and medical conditions. He/she accomplishes all procedures within universal precautions and standard infection control protocols. Sharpens and maintains all hand instruments at manufacturers standards for efficient clinical use. Obtains patient vial signs either manually or electronically and accurately records. Assists patients in scheduling appointments and coordinating continuity of care. Performs control point and inventory control duties as assigned.

Grade and Salary will be determined by a Professional Standards Board commensurate with education and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.

Licensure. Must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist with a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

Certification. Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be cert! ified as radiographers in their field.

Physical Requirements. ! Must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others.

English Language Proficiency. Dental hygienists must be proficient in spoken and written English language.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS

:

In addition to the Basic Requirements applicants must also meet Grade Requirements as indicated in the qualification standard. Although the Grade will be determined by a Professional Standards Board, the expected grade level for this position is GS-8.

GS-4.

None beyond the basic requirements.

GS-5.

In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience at the next lower level or completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene or in a directly related field of study.

GS-6.

At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level tha! t demonstrates the core competencies described at that level.

GS-7.

At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core compentencies described at that level.

GS-8.

At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core compentencies described at that level.

PREFERRED BACKGROUND OR EXPERIENCE:
1. Certification in basic life support methods.

Knowledge of state of the art preventative dentistry measures for patient instruction and training.

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology in order to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and interrelationship of the various organs appearing on the film and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the r! adiograph for diagnostic use; and to correctly mount them for viewing.

Skill in providing individual and group oral health care instructions to inpatients, outpatients, Nursing Home Care Unit patients, etc.

Knowledge of VA, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and related regulations and guidelines pertaining to dental matters.
