This position performs supervisory and professional duties involved in planning and directing activities of professional probation o! fficers and operations of all related services provided by Juvenile Court. Typical Duties:

  • Supervises professional and clerical employees including scheduling work hours, assigning and reviewing work, evaluating employee performance, approving leave requests, counseling and correcting employees · Oversees and participates in activities of the Probation Division; sets goals for the probation division in accordance with overall goals set by the Judge · Conducts special investigations of extra jurisdictional referrals, child custody cases, or legal residence of minors Confers with Magistrates, Attorneys and Public Defenders · Receives, screens, and approves all referrals and applications for petitions or hearings in Juvenile Court · Cooperates with representatives from state and local law enforcement agencies and the Department of Children’s Services · Interprets and implements instructions of the Court a! nd designs, supervises, and participates in special programs a! nd works with and advises other units of the Court · Receives and reviews monthly reports from probation staff · Interviews police, parents, schools, and other social agencies to arrive at a recommendation in accordance with effective supervision and rehabilitation · Plans and organizes programs or activities to achieve established goals and assesses court programs and makes recommendations for improvement and analyzes programs to determine appropriateness as referral source · Works with administrative staff to prepare the budget and formulate policies · Assesses staffing and physical resource needs, overseeing in-service and individual training as needed, attending and/or speaking at community meetings, conducting staff meetings and attends other meetings · Interprets and explains departmental programs to law enforcement agencies and the public, writes reports, letters, and memos
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's Degree in a field of Behavioral S! cience, such as Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, or a related field from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in probation, including two (2) years of experience in supervising a probation staff. ****************************** Substitution may be allowed ******************************************* Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in a field of Behavioral Science, such as Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice or related field from an accredited college or university and seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in probation, including two (2) years of experience in supervising a probation staff may be considered. Valid "Class D" Driver's License

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of juvenile delinquency, human behavior, and social problems Thorough knowledge of courtroom procedures in Juvenile Court and the rights and responsibi! lities of juveniles including thorough knowledge of local, state, and f! ederal laws affecting juvenile probation work and juvenile detention operation policies Thorough knowledge of Juvenile Information Management System and Juvenile Case Management System. Knowledge of social work objectives and techniques and the goals and objectives of various probation programs and available community resource agencies within the region of Davidson County for use in aiding juvenile probationers Knowledge of Civil Service and departmental rules, policies, and procedures and ability to train and supervise employees, interpret and implement the programs of the court, plan, develop and execute a departmental budget Knowledge of Tennessee Code Annotated and Rules of Juvenile Procedure and knowledge of the subunits of the court system Ability to analyze and evaluate reports and related materials and collect and analyze data to develop comprehensive reports and compile and maintain accurate records and reports and to communicate effectively, both orally and in wri! ting
